1. Emails with attachments can bring with them everything from viruses to trojans that will use your computer to send out more spam.
2. Identity theft emails may ask you to update a password, verify a purchase or change your bank account information. Fact: Real companies never send requests for this information by email. Do not follow any of these links. Go to your company's website and log in to see if these requests are real.
3. Spam filters will block nearly all of these dangerous emails.

You can end up on the mailing list of spammers in several ways. Signing up for free promotions, listing your email address on a message board or even downloading certain programs can allow your email address to fall into the wrong hands.
