Parent's Questions About Online Predators

How Real Is The Threat Of Online Predators?

Too real…. as a portion of my Internet safety program for parents, I enter a chat room as a 14 year old girl from the local area. At a recent workshop, I was approached online by a 26 year old man that lived less than 3 miles from the presentation site. After a 45 minute conversation about the type of panties I was wearing and other highly inappropriate

questions, the man asked if I wanted to meet. At this point I had been sent 3 pictures of the man as well as his cell phone number. The Sheriff's Department deputies that were attending the workshop watched as the man showed up at McDonald's and waited for over 30 minutes for a 14 year old victim to show up.

How Do Online Predators Target Children?

Online predators need information to target your child. They read the information your children posts about their hobbies, friends and social life. Many children's MySpace.com pages are filled with useful bits of information for the online predator. During the conversation predators ask questions that reveal children's feelings about school and their home life. Angry or lonely feelings allow a online predator to fill a child's need for adult attention.

How Can We Protect Our Children From Online Predators?

One of the first steps to protect your children from online predators is to know where your child is going online and what they are doing there. Parental control software can block undesireable websites such as MySpace.com as well as log all online conversations. Research and test several programs for the level of security and flexibility that you desire for your family. Most parental control programs have at least a 15-day free trial period. A word of caution… after you have chosenparental control software that will block and monitor your child's activity online, discuss the reasons why you have these safeguards on your computer. Simply putting a lock on your computer with no explanation as to the reasons will likely result in your child going to the a friend's house or the library to find unchaperoned time online.
